Seminars

CMSP seminars are usually held on Wednesdays at 16:00 in theÂ Luigi Stasi Seminar RoomÂ (Leonardo Building, first floor).

Informal seminars may also take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in theÂ Luigi Stasi Seminar RoomÂ at 11:00 a.m.

Joint ICTP/SISSA Statistical Physics Seminars are organized jointly by the CMSP group of ICTP and the Statistical Physics Section at SISSA. The seminars take place either at ICTP or SISSA, alternately on Tuesday mornings.

All seminars are announced on the CMSP information board located in the Leonardo Building, second floor, near the CMSP Secretariat.

Europe/Rome Gian Marcello Andolina (College de France) Abstract: Amperean superconductivity is an exotic phenomenon stemming from attractive effective electron-electron interactions (EEEIs) mediated by a transverse gauge field. Originally introduced in the context of quantum spin liquids and high-Tc superconductors, Amperean superconductivity has been recently proposed to occur at temperatures on the order of 1-20 K in two-dimensional, parabolic-band, electron gases embedded inside deep sub-wavelength optical cavities. In this talk, I first generalize the microscopic theory of cavity-induced Amperean superconductivity to the case of graphene and then argue that this superconducting state cannot be achieved in the deep sub-wavelength regime. In the latter regime, indeed, a cavity induces only EEEIs between density fluctuations rather than the current-current interactions which are responsible for Amperean pairing. Europe/Rome Alioscia Hamma Universita' degli studi di Napoli Federico II Abstract: Quantum physics is inherently different from classical physics and this difference comes in two layers. First, quantum correlations are stronger than classical correlations and do violate Bellâs inequalities. Second, based on the assumption that P is not NP, quantum physics is exponentially harder to simulate than classical physics. The resource that makes quantum computers different from classical computers consists on those operations that go beyond the stabilizer formalism. In this talk, we show a new way of computing non-stabilizerness, called Stabilizer Entropy (SE), and show how this quantity can be experimentally measured. We show how the SE determines the hardness of quantum verification and of simulability, and how in turn it is involved in the onset of quantum complex behavior, as, e.g., revealed in the Out-of-Time-Order correlators. Moreover, we show how SE determines the complexity of a Black Hole and how to retrieve information scrambled by it. Finally, starting from the thermodynamic interpretation of the SE, we sketch a new approach to quantum complexity based on the interplay of entanglement and non-stabilizerness. ICTP pio@ictp.it

Abstract: Significant advances with unconventional extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft x-ray spectroscopies have been recently achieved at the FERMI free electron laser in Trieste (Italy). Time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy (tr-XAS) has been used to explore the sub-picosecond structural and electronic rearrangement in materials under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature driven by intense fs-laser pulses[1]. tr-XAS has been found to be effective also for monitoring the ultrafast charge transfer in photo-excited functional materials[2]. Moreover, it has been successfully employed in combination with impulsive stimulated Raman scattering for revealing the molecular motion in real time with unprecedented elemental and enantiomeric selectivity[3]. High sensitivity to the atomic structure of interfaces in materials has been demonstrated by nonlinear second harmonic spectroscopy in the EUV range[4,5]. This seminar provides an overview on these disruptive experiments carried out at the beamline TIMEX of FERMI, outlining possible challenging developments and future opportunities for scientific research.
