Since 1986 the Mathematics section at ICTP has played an important role in fostering mathematics research and education in developing countries. Research is carried out in various fields of Mathematics by the permanent staff, postdocs, and graduate students, as well as by scientific visitors from all over the world.Â

Typically, the section organizes from 5 to 10 focused activities a year involving an average of 100 participants. These activities are the core of the section's activities and are crucial for disseminating current mathematics knowledge of the highest level as widely as possible.

In addition the Mathematics section, like all the other sections at ICTP, participates in the Diploma program. Since 2011 Diploma students can apply to stay on to work on a PhD in Mathematics in a joint program with SISSA.

The Mathematics section also offers opportunities for postdocs and research fellows; click here for latest announcements.

Once a month, the section organises The Basic Notions Seminar Series to broaden the understanding of some mathematical concepts.

School and Workshop on Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry in Prime Characteristics | (smr 3866)
The Call for Applications will be open soon
The school will introduce commutative algebra and algebraic geometry in prime characteristics and their relationship with complex algebraic geometry. There have been many important developments in these fields during the last three decades. There will be four courses of lectures to highlight some of these developments related to vector bundles and tight closure, singularities in prime characteristics, F-signature and Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity and study of singularities via Big Cohen-Macaulay (BCM)-algebras, perfectoid spaces and Frobenius splitting.
Confirmed Speakers:
Holger BRENNER, University of Osnabrueck, Germany
Ilya SMIRNOV, Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics, Spain
Kevin TUCKER, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA
Keiichi WATANABE, Nihon University, Tokyo, Japan
Grants: A limited number of grants are available to support the attendance of selected participants, with priority given to participants from developing countries. There is no registration fee.

An ICTP meeting in presence in Arusha - United Republic of Tanzania
The topic of this year EUAMP-ICTP school is Enumerative Combinatorics, chosen following recent efforts at strengthening combinatorics in East Africa, a topic that is easily accessible and yet little taught and researched. It relates to the research group Combinatorial Research Studio (CoRS) funded by the International Science Programme of SIDA.
Minicourses topics:
Per Alexandersson: Introductory combinatorics
Balazs Szendroi: Generating functions
Stephan Wagner: Analytic combinatorics
Fernando Rodriguez-Villegas: Combinatorics, finite fields and geometry
Hans Höngesberg: Combinatorics of lattice paths
Nadia Lafrenière: Combinatorics with SageMath
Lectures topics:
Fufa Beyene: Merging-free partitions and run-sorted permutations
Frether Getachew: Parity Alternating Permutations Starting with an Odd Integer
Olivia Nabawanda: A weighted Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for (P,w)-partitions
Grants: A limited number of grants are available to support the attendance of selected participants, with priority given to participants from developing countries. There is no registration fee.

Summer School on Differential Geometry | (smr 3862)
This school is organised in partnership with the Clay Mathematics Institute and is also supported by a grant from the IMU-CDC Conference Support Program, which is partially supported by the Abel Board.
The school gives an ideal platform for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and early-career mathematicians to learn the basics of differential geometry in close connection with recent breakthrough developments. Concrete topics include Kähler geometry, Ricci curvature, geometric convergence, and minimal surfaces.
Differential geometry is among the most active fields in mathematics with fundamental connections to physics and other sciences. Indeed, J. Douglas was awarded the first Fields Medal for his remarkable contribution to the study of minimal surfaces in Euclidean space. Today the field is as exciting and vibrant as ever. For example, the resolutions of Willmoreâs and Lawson's conjectures bring new insights and revitalize old techniques. This summer school would allow experts in the field to gather, share ideas, and pass on their knowledge to the next generations.
